vitiligo skincare guide.

everything you need to understand vitiligo what it is, how it alters skin biology, and how to build a gentle vitiligo skincare routine without making inflammation worse.

what vitiligo actually is.

vitiligo is a chronic autoimmune condition in which the immune system mistakenly targets and destroys melanocytes the specialized cells responsible for producing melanin pigment. when these cells are lost, areas of the skin lose their color entirely, creating distinct depigmented patches.

it is not contagious. it is not caused by hygiene, diet, or lifestyle. while it is permanent and unpredictable, it alters the physical architecture of the skin barrier, demanding a highly specific approach to daily care.

1-2% of the global population live with vitiligo, affecting roughly 100 million people worldwide.
0.5-2.5% prevalence in India, with higher clusters recorded in specific regional communities.
50% of cases begin before age 20, showing that barrier care must start early.
2 distinct types segmental (localized to one side) and non-segmental (spreading bilaterally across multiple body areas).

the skin reality: how vitiligo affects skin barrier function.

most mainstream conversations focus purely on the visual appearance of depigmented patches. to build an effective vitiligo skincare routine, we must look at how the condition fundamentally shifts the way your skin behaves at a cellular level.

extreme uv vulnerability

depigmented patches have a zero-melanin threshold, meaning the skin lacks its built-in UV filter. while clinical research paradoxically shows that vitiligo skin has a lower overall risk of developing skin cancer due to heightened systemic immune surveillance, these areas burn rapidly and lack protection against environmental radiation. targeted daily protection is mandatory.

compromised barrier function

studies indicate that vitiligo patches experience higher rates of transepidermal water loss (TEWL). the physical skin barrier is inherently more vulnerable, absorbing external irritants quickly and reacting to ingredients that unaffected skin might tolerate.

inflammation triggers

the autoimmune activity underlying vitiligo means the skin's inflammatory response is already heightened. harsh actives, fragrances, alcohols and aggressive exfoliants can trigger or worsen this response leading to redness, burning and potentially spreading the condition.

the koebner phenomenon

reactive skin is highly susceptible to the koebner response; a process where physical trauma, chemical irritation, or friction triggers the formation of entirely new vitiligo patches. this makes gentle handling and non-abrasive products an absolute priority.

ingredients to avoid with vitiligo.

not all commercial cosmetics are safe for an autoimmune barrier. choosing the wrong active can trigger a localized inflammatory cascade. these are the primary skincare ingredients to avoid with vitiligo:

  • synthetic fragrance the single most common trigger for contact dermatitis and cell-stress signals. both synthetic perfumes and heavy natural essential oils must be excluded entirely from your routine.
  • high-concentration chemical acids strong AHA and BHA chemical exfoliants strip the intercellular lipid matrix. if used to treat texture, they must stay at minimal percentages and should never be applied directly onto active depigmented patches.
  • abrasive physical scrubs mechanical exfoliation creates microscopic tears in the skin tissue. this physical friction directly risks activating the koebner phenomenon, causing patches to spread.
  • hydroquinone & stripping bleaching agents specific skin-lightening phenols can display severe melanocyte toxicity. they can permanently damage the cells in surrounding areas and aggressively accelerate depigmentation.

what vitiligo skin actually needs.

the goal of vitiligo skincare is never to reverse or treat the underlying condition-no over-the-counter topical active can alter an autoimmune pathway. instead, the objective is to protect the exposed tissue, lower cellular stress signals, and fortify the compromised barrier function.

  • deep barrier support bio-compatible lipids, fatty acids, and plant-derived squalane that mimic the skin’s natural lipid barrier to lock in hydration and block out external irritants.
  • cellular soothing actives ingredients like nopal cactus extract, centella asiatica, and allantoin that physically intercept inflammatory stress signals before they trigger redness or burning.
  • pure mineral spf non-irritating physical blockers like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide that reflect UV rays away from unprotected skin patches without the heat-generating chemical reactions of traditional sunscreens.

why we built evermore

evermore was born out of a twenty-year personal struggle with vitiligo. our co-founder, shivani, was diagnosed at age 11, experiencing firsthand how standard cosmetic bases-flooded with drying alcohols, active acids, and hidden fragrances-constantly left her skin barrier raw and inflamed.

we did not build this brand to treat or cure vitiligo. we built it because skin living with chronic sensitivity deserves formulas it can finally trust. by anchoring our entire collection in a soothing, deeply hydrating nopal cactus base, we created a safe haven for the most reactive skin on earth.
